Bertolf is a part of the Lorrainville project, an idea that was cooked up in January 2011, when Guido Aalbers (who worked with Bertolf on For Life and Snakes & Ladders) was playing a Facebook game called Make Your Own Album Cover. As I understand it, Aalbers picked the non-existent band's name by putting a finger down on a map of Lorrainville, Quebec and came up with the title of the a non-existent album You May Never Know What Happiness Is. Below is the album cover.
Soon at Guido Aalbers' Facebook page the many songwriters and musicians connected with him began to communicate ideas of what the album could be like. As Aalbers has said at his Blogspot page, "a spontaneous discussion developed on my FB account and in my mailbox. At reaction number 40, I knew I was going to make the album." Once he committed himself to his idea, a melancholic, singer/songwriter album after the style of Ryan Adams, the late Elliot Smith, or Ray LaMontagne, he began soliciting the involvement of musicians to actually make the album. Within only a few days, he had as many as 67 songs and many more commitments from artists, offering to donate to the making of the album, a purely creative and not commercial project.

Here are two videos of Bertolf during recording sessions in April and June 2011 for his contributions to the album:

Angelo de Rijke improvising on guitar:
The Lorrainville album should be seen, not as a compilation album, but rather a real album by a very large band, unified and inspired by the album cover created by Guido Aalbers one day at Facebook.
